Galveston Seawall History

The Galveston Seawall is a testament to the resilience of the city of Galveston, Texas following a devastating natural disaster over a century ago.

On September 8th, 1900, a hurricane and tidal wave destroyed much of the city, killing 6,000 people. In response, a board of engineers was appointed to devise protection from future storms.

The engineers proposed to raise the elevation of the city and build a solid concrete wall along the Gulf shore. Buildings were jacked up and the surface of the city was upgraded, increasing the elevation to a maximum of 12 feet above sea level.

The 17foot high seawall was built between 1901 and 1904 and proved its value in 1915 when a more severe storm did far less damage. Since then, the wall has been periodically lengthened and Galveston has grown into a modern and prosperous city.

The Galveston Seawall is a reminder of the power of resilience in the face of tragedy. The wall stands as a symbol of hope to the community of Galveston, and as a reminder of the importance of protecting against natural disasters.
